The culinary heart of every small Kentucky town is the Mexican restaurant. This is one of my favorites. Strange as it may sound, I simply can't find a Mexican restaurant with this kind of quality in Lexington. The chips were freshly made, and the salsa was good and spicy. Not too spicy, but flavorful spicy. The meal took longer than normal to get, but it was worth the wait. I went with the Chorizo Loco, which was $1 off the day I was there. Fantastic dish. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Tender, juicy, and, when mixed with the chorizo, was one of the best Mexican dishes I've ever eaten. I'd drive the two hours from Lexington just for this dish. If you're looking for something to complain about, the refried beans are not the best. They have a strange aftertaste. But, I didn't care. The Chorizo Loco is all I want. No sides needed!
The chips and salsa were OK and my compatriots gave similar reviews of their basic tacos... but I ordered the Pollo De Jefes Special (chicken) and it may possibly be one of the best things I've ever eaten. Maybe a little salty, but so much flavor, so much goodness. If I could compare the flavor to anything it would be the "golden" sauce that you can order at some Hibachi restaurants. If you are here give this thing a try. I'm almost ready to drive 800 miles back to get it again. Our service was attentive and pretty prompt. They were able to accommodate a large group and give us our own section - both for the other guest's sake and ours. Chips and salsa were free and refilled as needed. The bathroom was clean and taken care of. Parking is ample.
Twelve folks from New Jersey walk into a Kentucky Mexican restaurant and discover amazing service, delicious food, and prices that leave enough greenery in their wallets to shop at the nearby 'Mart! ' This was our church group's second visit to El Mariachi and we have decided to make the stop an annual tradition (We come to this region for a home repairing mission.). There was not a hint of panic from the wait staff as we were seated at a perfectly positioned table for our group. Menu's distributed ... drink orders taken ... now what to choose. Drinks served while we were still deciding. We assumed one check but the very attentive and friendly waiter asked if we'd like separate checks. WOW! Absolutely!! And, no mandated gratuity for a group our size. Speaking of size ... this menu has something for everyone! The teen in our group just wanted mozzarella sticks ... I know, I know who orders cheese sticks fried at a Mexican restaurant but she did. I couldn't hear everyone's order but people were enjoying the never ending chips and mild salsa. Oh the food ... ok, here is a minor complaint ... our main courses were delivered before the soup and appetizers but these entrees arrived with amazing speed. And, the plates were HOT...VERY HOT!!! But then those who ordered soup asked about our soup only to see a waiter with perhaps the largest bowl ever brought to a restaurant dining table. One soup ordered was seen in a panic at the size of the "bowl" of soup... another surrendered her "bowl" to another more adventurous diner. Glimpsing over the size of this tub of soup we saw a beautiful array of colors and contents (All for $7)! The aroma hit home ... initial sips (soup was very hot) revealed an incredibly delicious blend of flavors!! This chicken soup, which is two meals worth of food or more, is damn good!! I couldn't make it for the price ... it became two lunches ... did I say how flavorfully good it was?? Looked pretty too!! The soup reflected all of the meals. Everyone was raving about theirs. Mine featured a heaping pile of what might be the best sauteed onions I have ever been served over perfectly cooked chicken. The refried beans were actually flavorful and the rice was good. All of us loved the experience... we appreciated the service (yes, the wait staff has an accent but so do we.). Order the soup but be prepared ... order anything... if you live close by make this a regular stop or if you are traveling through stop for dinner or lunch! Thank you El Mariachi!!
